The M1917 6-ton was a version of the French-made char leger FT-17. It represents an early foray into US military motorized doctrine and design.
The American version featured an American-produced engine, all steel wheels, an octagonal turret (as opposed to the round French design) and additional view slots for the driver. Later versions of the M1917 were fitted with a Browning M1919 machine gun in place of the available 7.62mm Marlin machine gun (in the year 1919).
In this age of large main battle tanks, viewing the M1917 6-ton in person makes the tank appear as nothing more than a children's riding toy due to it's diminutive size.
