Boeing / Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche

The RAH-66 Comanche helicopter was to replace the AH-1, UH-1, OH-6 and OH-58
helicopters in service with the US Army.

The RAH-66 Comanche helicopter was to be the next generation answer for the
United States Army in replacing its aging series of UH-1, AH-1 Cobra, OH-6
and OH-58 Kiowa helicopters in full. The RAH-66 was designed as the world's
first stealth helicopter and was classified as a light attack. The system
was to operate fully-powered internal bays housing anti-armor and anti-air
missiles and was to promote the use of stealth materials to further conceal
it against enemy radar. Had it been produced, the RAH-66 would have been the
world's most advanced combat helicopter in service with any army in any
nation.

Developed from the LHX (Light Helicopter Experimental) program of the early
1980's, the design proposal produced by a Boeing/Sikorsky venture won out
over Bell/McDonnell Douglas. First flights by prototype 1 were carried out
in 1996 while the second prototype flew later that decade. The sharp lines
were reminiscent of the design taken to the F-117 nighthawk stealth fighter
and featured sharp angles and a low radar cross section.

The RAH-66 featured a large 5-blade composite main rotor system and a
smaller tail rotor housed in a protective covering, similar to the
French-based Gazelle systems. Internal weapons bays were intended from the
beginning as was a retractable powered undercarriage. Optional stub wings
allowed the system more flexibility in armament provision at the cost of a
larger radar signature. Standard armament was a powered 20mm three barrel
General Electric cannon in a Giat turret system. The pilot and
copilot/gunner sat in a tandem-seat cockpit with good visibility.

Flight and control systems aboard the RAH-66 were of the state-of-the-art
variety with helmet-mounted controls, sidestick cyclic controls, 3D map
displays, fly-by-wire with a triple redundancy feature, FLIR and laser
designation and the power Apache Longbow-based millimeter wave radar to
boot.

On the hypothetical battlefield, the RAH-66 system would have supported
battlefield combat by taking out enemy armor and aircraft at range. With the
tracking power of the mighty Longbow and the nimbleness of the smaller
systems like the OH-58 Kiowa, the RAH-66 helicopter would have been a
welcomed addition to the modern and wireless battlefield. The RAH-66
Comanche never came to fruition, however, as the entire project was
officially cancelled by the United States Army in the Spring of 2004 mostly
due to budgetary cutbacks.

Boeing OH-6 / MD 500 / MH-6 (Little Bird)

The MD 500 Defender series has proven to be a highly adaptable battlefield
observation platform.

The OH-6 series of helicopters is a successful light observation and light
attack system fielded with the US Army and special forces since the
mid-1960's. The aircraft proved nimble enough to operate in close-support of
ground forces and could also be called upon for light strikes against
aggressor targets. The original OH-6 "Cayuse" birthed the hughly successful
Hughes 500 series that would go on to see countless export orders in both
civilian and military roles.

The OH-6 Cayuse was originally trialed alongside Hiller and Bell models in
the United States Army's search for a new observation helicopter. After
securing the contract, the Hughes-produced system would be further developed
and see extensive combat operations in the Vietnam Conflict. In post-war,
the 500 series would me marketed in the civilian format with great success.

The 500M "Defender" series would mark the aircraft's entry into the military
export market. The system could be crewed by two personnel with seating in
the cabin for an additional two people. If needed, the rear bench could be
removed and the 500M could easily seat four combat-ready troops on the
floor. Japan would license-produce this variant for self-use and additional
initial orders from the United States would be placed by Columbia.

A multitude of variants would follow including anti-tank TOW-capable models
and a naval variant with search capabilities. The system would change hands
from Hughes to McDonnell Douglas and finally to Boeing, who would later
secure a contract to upgrade the AH-6 and MH-6J's to the "Little Bird"
standard through the Mission Enhanced Little Bird program.

Aerospatiale / Eurocopter AS 332 Super Puma / AS 532 Cougar

The AS 332 Super Puma was based on the successful SA 330 Puma design and is
a larger aircraft with newer engines.

The Super Puma was developed by French-based Aerospatiale (formerly Sud
Aviation) form the successful AS 330 Puma series of medium-lift utility
helicopters. The newer Super Puma design was essentially a base Puma with an
improved avionics suite, enlarged fuselage, new Turbomeca-brand Makila-type
1,700 shaft horsepower turboshaft engines, intake fitters, ventral fin
structure along the tail boom, revised nose assembly and a composite main
rotor blade. Since the type entered production, Aerospatiale had merged with
Germany's Daimler-Benz Aerospace AG (DASA) to become Eurocopter in 1992. The
Super Puma is now marketed under the Eurocopter brand label though it still
retains the "AS" (for Aerospatiale) designation in its model number.

The Super Puma prototype achieved first flight on September 13th, 1978. The
prototype was designated as the AS 331. The new design, being larger than
the Puma, was allowed greater cabin space for more passengers and more fuel
for greater ranges. The nose featured provisions for the Honeywell Primus
500 or Bendix/King RDR 1400 series weather radars. Super Pumas were
eventually produced in short and long fuselage versions. Early users of
Super Pumas became the commercial oil industry where the large helicopter
proved popular in shuttling oil rig workers to and fro.

Externally, the Super Puma shares many of its characteristics with the
preceding Puma design. Its engines are mounted forward and high atop the
fuselage exhausting outwards above the crew cabin. The engines power a
four-bladed composite construction main rotor and five-bladed tail rotor
mounted to starboard. The pilot and co-pilot are fitted into a glazed
forward-mounted canopy with excellent views in all vital directions. Each
pilot is afforded an automobile-style door for easy entry and exit. The
fuselage sides are dominated by two large cabin doors (one door to a side)
with cabin windows. The undercarriage is full retractable and features two
main landing gears (single-wheeled) recessing into low-mounted fuselage side
sponsons as well as a nose gear fitting two wheels recessing behind and
under the cockpit floor. Like the Puma series before it, the Super Puma
features an elevated empennage with a single vertical tail fin and a
horizontal tailplane jutting out of the portside of the fin.

Like the Puma before it, the Super Puma has been widely accepted into
service with dozens of countries around the world. The Super Puma has since
been branched into a dozen or so variants beginning with the AS 331
prototype. This produced the AS 332A commercial pre-production models
followed by the first commercial production examples designated as the AS
332C. Military pre-production models became the AS 332B followed by the
initial militarized forms in the AS 332B1. The AS 332 C1 was a dedicated
Search & Rescue (SAR) example equipped with six cabin stretchers and a
surface search radar. The AS 332F became a militarized anti-submarine and
anti-ship variant while the AS 332F1 was a base navalized Super Puma
modified to contend with the rigors of the salty ocean environment.

The AS 332L first flew on October 10th, 1980, appeared as a new civilian
production model and sported a lengthened fuselage for an increase in its
cabin space and fuel capacity as well as uprated turboshaft engines.
Operations of the type were certified in 1983. The AS 332L1 was a similar
model featuring an even more lengthened fuselage containing an airliner-type
interior and uprated Makila 1A1 turboshaft engines and made its operational
appearance in 1986. The AS 332M became a militarized version of the AS 332L
model while the AS 332M1 was a similar militarized AS 332L with a lengthened
fuselage.

The AS 332L2 "Super Puma Mk II" was a further civilian-based transport
development of the type beginning service in 1993 and featuring a
long-fuselage for an extra row of seats. These Super Pumas were also given a
spheriflex rotor head with EFIS flight instrumentation as well as longer
main rotor blades with parabolic tips and a four-axis Automatic
Flight-Control System (AFCS). The cockpit was updated to include four large
multi-function LCD screens. Passenger seating is between 19 and 24 persons.
A 15-passenger VIP model (Super Puma Mk II VIP) is also available complete
with galley and toilet.

The AS 332L1 utilized twin Turbomeca Makila 1A1-series turboshaft engines
running at 1,742 shaft horsepower each while the AS 332L2 fitted twin
Turbomeca 1A2-series turboshaft engines rated at 1,819 shaft horsepower
each. Top speed for the AS 332L1 was 278 kilometers-per-hour with a range of
841 kilometers and a service ceiling of 20,000 feet. Rate-of-climb was
listed at 1,618 feet-per-minute. Comparatively, the AS 332L2 operated at a
top speed of 278 kilometers-per-hour, a range of 831 kilometers, a service
ceiling of 23,622 feet and a rate-of-climb of 1,614 feet-per-minute.

The AS 332L has seen extensive production and use during its run. These are
now being replaced by the newer AS 332L2 Super Puma MK II series. Bristow
Helicopters acquired no fewer than 31 custom AS 332L's for its North
Sea-based offshore oil rig work. Customizations included folding cabin
seats, life rafts, jettisonable cabin doors, IFR instrumentation, de-icing
equipment, baggage compartments and North Sea-related navigational aid
equipment. These came under the designation of "Tiger" (sometimes called
"Super Tigers").

Indonesian Aerospace (formally IPTN) has license-produced the Super Puma as
the NAS 332L1 of which at least 7 were sold to Iran in a 1996 deal.

Beginning in 1990, Super Pumas were separated in their civilian and
militarized forms by the latter taking on the production designation of AS
532 "Cougar" (civilian models still retained their AS 332 designations). The
Cougar family now consists of the AS 532MC Mk I (note the "Mk I" mark
designation was retroactively applied to previous Super Puma forms) as a
Search & Rescue (SAR) platform, the AS 532SC Mk I as a short-fuselage
anti-submarine variant, the AS 532U2 Mk II as an unarmed base model, the AS
532A2 Mk II as another Search & Rescue form, the AS 532L2 Mk II featuring a
lengthened fuselage for extra seating and extended main rotor blades, and
the simplified AS 532 "Cougar 100" with fixed landing gear. Militarized
Super Puma/Cougar aircraft can display a broad range of armaments including
7.62mm general purpose cabin-door machine guns (on pintle mountings), 7.62mm
gun pods, rocket pods, anti-ship missiles and various makes of
air-to-surface missiles.

The Eurocopter EC 225 civilian and its EC 725 militarized variant is an
improved version of the Puma family line. This system first flew in November
of 2000 and features a five-bladed main rotor assembly. It also has a larger
cabin with newer Makila 1A4 turboshaft engines featuring FADEC (Full
Authority Digital Engine Control), a greater Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW)
and revised EFIS avionics.

Civilian operators of the Super Puma (in varied forms) includes Australia,
Azerbaijan, Brazil, Germany, Finland, Norway, Canada, Hong Kong, Iceland,
Japan, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, Morocco and the United Kingdom. Military
operators include Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Ecuador, Greece,
Indonesia, Kuwait, Mexico, Nigeria, Oman, Panama, Saudi Arabia, Singapore,
Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Thailand, Venezuela and Vietnam.

A recent Super Puma-related accident occurred on April 1st, 2009 involving a
Bond Offshore Helicopter Super Puma AS 332L2 model. This system crashed into
the North Sea killing all 16 personnel on board. The cause of the accident
is reportedly related to the main rotor gearbox which had suffered failure
in the flight.

Bell UH-1 Iroquois (Huey)

The UH-1 Huey became the symbol of American involvement in the Vietnam War.

The UH-1 Iroquois "Huey" became an important part of American military
actions beginning in 1960 and expanding throughout the latter part of the
Cold War years. The ubiquitous system became synonymous with the American
effort in Vietnam, no doubt due to her inherent capabilities to take on just
about any needed role. Despite her consistent association with that war, her
legacy has rightfully developed into so much more thanks to her use
throughout the modern world in both military and civilian roles encompassing
search and rescue, assault, transport and humanitarian efforts. Despite her
official "Iroquois" name, the nickname of "Huey" stuck thanks to her early
"HU-1" designation (later redesignated to UH-1 in 1962. Hence the Iroquois
name was - and is - seldom used to this day when referencing the UH-1 series
of helicopters.

The Huey developed from advances made in turbine technology throughout the
1950's. Bell produced the turbine-powered Model 47 (XH-13F) in 1954 to which
the United States Army took special interest in. The need for a MedEvac
helicopter was on the US Army wish list and, as such, Bell was tagged with
developing a solution - and the prototype XH-40 (Bell Model 204) was born.
First flight of XH-40 occurred on October 22nd, 1956 and were followed by
two additional XH-40 prototypes, fitting the Lycoming 700 horsepower
XT-53-L-1 engine. A further six developmental models were then ordered as
YH-40 evaluation aircraft. These were essentially the same as the XH-40
prototypes but had their cabin space extended a full 12-inches. One of these
YH-40's was set aside as a test bed featuring turbofan engines and wing
assemblies becoming Bell Model 533. The Model 204 entered production for the
US Army as the HU-1A, becoming the first turbine-powered helicopter in
service with any US military branch. First deliveries would fall to the
101st Airborne Division, the 57th Medical Detachment and the 82nd Airborne
Division. The 57th Medical Detachment would be the first to field the system
in Vietnam beginning in March 1962.

By all respects, design of the Huey was quite utilitarian although more
pleasing to the eye that other rotary-wing offerings developed during the
1950s. Aircraft construction was comprised of the main fuselage housing the
cockpit and passenger cabin (along with their associated systems and
equipment), the engine and rotor mast section and the empennage, or tail
section containing the tail rotor. The pilot and co-pilot were seated at the
extreme forward of the design with a windowed cockpit providing excellent
vision forward, above, to the sides and forward-below. Entry for either
cockpit seating position was made through an automobile-style hinged door.
The cabin featured a large sliding windowed door on either side of the
fuselage for easy access (in most Vietnam-era pictures, these doors are
almost always lest open). The single engine was mounted atop the rear
portion of the crew cabin root with the rotor mast extending upwards forward
of the engine. The rotor blades on initial models were simple two-blade
arrangements with a rotor mast for added stability (the latest Huey version
sports a four-blade rotor system). The engine exhausted rearwards over the
base of the empennage. The tail section itself made up nearly half the
length of the entire fuselage and featured horizontal fins about half-way
down the tail section. The section ended with a single vertical fin adorned
with the two-blade tail rotor system mounted to the portside (the latest
Huey sports a four-blade tail rotor). The undercarriage consisted of a pair
of fixed landing skids - braced in two areas - allowing for landing and
take-off from just about any type of surface making it useful to both land
and sea-based operators. Throughout its production run - with the exception
of the twin-engine Huey - the base UH-1 Huey series would retain this unique
and very identifiable design.

With its transport origins and inherently large cabin space, the Huey was
designed from the outset to serve occupants in quantity. Passenger space was
equivalent to 14 combat-ready troops. This arrangement could be supplanted
by up to 6 medical litters when in the MedEvac role. The base crew could
comprise 1 to 4 personnel as needed and depending on the role and equipment
utilized.

The UH-1 airframe proved highly adaptable throughout its tenure,
particularly when a showcase piece in the Vietnam War as helicopter
gunships. Standard armaments included the use of pintle-mounted M60 7.62mm
machine guns or specialized external mountings for dual 7.62mm miniguns
mounts, 2-, 7-, or 19-shot 2.75" rocket pods and 7.62mm machine guns in
quad-mountings. In the Vietnam War, US Army Hueys were dubbed "Cobras" when
fitted with machine gun armament and "Hogs" when sporting rocket pods while
unarmed Hueys became "Slicks" (similarly, the USN and USMC called their
transports "Dolphins" and their gunships "Sharks"). Many other weapon
arrangements were trialed with the Huey airframe throughout the Vietnam War
resulting in a plethora of experimental systems with a laundry list of
x-type designations. These trials included the use of air-to-surface
missiles, 7.62mm minigun gun pods, 20mm and 30mm cannon armament, mine
dispensers, heavy caliber 12.7mm miniguns and 40mm grenade launchers. In
all, the series was already proving its adaptability to just about any role
imaginable even though many of these impressive armament arrangements were
never accepted into any official role.

Of all conflicts that the Huey has ever been showcased in, no doubt its
involvement in the Vietnam War truly cemented its legacy. The Huey would go
on to become the symbolic icon of the American involvement in the war with
imagery of troops exiting the hovering helicopter displayed across American
televisions on a seemingly nightly basis. Hueys in Vietnam were called upon
to fulfill a variety of roles that most any aircraft of the time could
match. UH-1's were utilized in their intended troop transport roles but were
also featured in the all-important roles of medical evacuation, search and
rescue efforts, general transport, VIP transport, command and control and as
helicopter gunships. Huey use, armaments and tactics generally changed
throughout the course of the war based on battlefield experience and adapted
to needs of the moment. Models showcased in the war covered the UH-1A, B, C,
D and H models. UH-1B and UH-1C Hueys were eventually supplanted in the
gunship role by the dedicated AH-1 Cobra twin-seat attack helicopter
gunships beginning to arrive in August of 1967 (AH-1G). In all, over 3,300
UH-1 Hueys were lost in the conflict along with some 2,200 airmen while a
total of over 5,000 units were introduced to the region.

The production run of UH-1's yielded about a dozen major variants, some with
sub-variants to boot. The initial production variant became the HU-1A,
utilizing the early-form designation system that eventually changed to UH-1A
in 1962 and onwards. Production netted 182 UH-1A's. These systems were
followed by four YUH-1B prototypes leading up to the UH-1B production model,
essentially being "improved" A-models with revised rotors and other subtle
outward changes. The UH-1C arrived with revised blades, improved rotor-head
and new engines, built to a 767 example total.

The first major "departure" from the initial production models became the
UH-1D, of which some 2,008 examples were produced. These were based on the
Bell Model 205 which itself was nothing more than a long-fuselage version of
the Bell Model 204 while increasing rotor diameter, range and power from its
Lycoming T53-L-9A, T53-L-11D 1,100shp engines or the Allied Signal Engines
(ASE) T53-L-13B turboshafts of 1,400shp. The sliding double-windowed side
doors were also made larger in this version. The US Army pressed these into
service as troop transports beginning in 1963 to replace their aging
Sikorsky CH-34 Chocktaw fleet while many were eventually upgraded to the
upcoming UH-1H standard. UH-1D's could be crewed by 2 personnel while
supplying room for up to 13 troops.

UH-1D (as well as UH-1H) production models were armed with the standard
door-mounted M23 M60D 7.62mm machine guns on M23 subsystems to provide cover
fire along the flanks. Early production UH-1D's featured the XM3 23-tube
rocket launchers, the M5 40mm grenade launcher and the M6 quad M60C machine
gun mounts for the gunship role. The large cabin space of D-models
eventually set them apart as primary utility helicopters while the smaller
UH-1B and UH-1C's were therefore utilized as primarily as gunships.

The UH-1E became a USMC product based on the UH-1B and UH-1C models. 192 of
this type were built. Likewise, the UH-1F fell into service with the USAF
and were similarly based on the UH-1B and UH-1C models. F-models were
further differentiated by their use of General Electric T-58-GE-3 turboshaft
engines of 1,325shp. 120 total examples of these Hueys were produced.

The UH-1H was a high quantity version, essentially similar to the UH-1D and
built in some 5,435 total examples, and featured an improved Lycoming
T-53-L-13B turboshaft engine of 1,400shp. H-models had the same basic
armament suite of the UH-1D's - the standard M23 M60D 7.62mm door mounted
machine guns. Likewise, passenger seating equaled space for 13 combat-ready
troops. Additional changes included a revised two-bladed semi-rigid all
metal main rotor system and rigid delta hinged two-bladed tail rotor system.
H-models became the model of quantity of the entire Hueys production line.
Production spanned from 1965 through 1986 and was also undertaken under
license in Turkey and Taiwan. A specialized H-model was developed in the
six-man (2 pilots and 4 gunners) UH-1H "Nighthawk" featuring a Zenon
searchlight system coupled to an M134 7.62mm minigun armament for night
work. Additional armaments included twin M60D 7.62mm machine guns and an
M2HB 12.7mm heavy machine gun.

The USN utilized the purpose-built HH-1K (based on the Bell Model 204) for
Search and Rescue duties. The UH-1M was a dedicated gunship model fitted
with the Lycoming T-53-L-13 engine of 1,400shp.

The UH-1N was a somewhat vast departure from previous Huey offerings in that
this model version sported twin turboshaft engines. These aircraft were
built upon the Bell Model 212 design and also went under the name of "Twin
Pac". The UH-1P was a UH-1F variant utilized by the USAF for use by the 20th
Special Operations Squadron "Green Hornets". The UH-1V became a specialized
US Army MedEvac model with room for six stretchers and one personnel while
the UH-1Y appeared as a new Bell product intended to upgrade operators of
their current UH-1N systems.

As of this writing, the USMC has begun deliveries (beginning early 2009) of
what is expected to be 123 examples of the UH-1V "Venom" helicopter models.
First fight of this variant was achieved on December 20th, 2001 and
production now signals the new generation of Hueys. Despite maintaining a
general external look to her previous incarnations, the Venom is an all-new
modernized Huey complete with an all-composite four-blade main rotor, twin
engine arrangement, four-blade tail rotor, FLIR, all-digital cockpit
sporting multi-function displays and improvements over the base Huey's
maximum speed, range and take-off weight. This modernization will no doubt
extend the life of the Huey for some decades more.

The United States Army have already phased out their fleet of frontline
UH-1's, having replaced them with the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk series while
still retaining some 700 Hueys in for a few years more. The USAF still
utilize Hueys in limited utilitarian roles as needed but overall, the
Sikorsky UH-60 series is poised to become the next workhorse of the American
military.

Beyond Bell's localized production of its Huey line, the helicopter has
undergone license-production in Italy through the Agusta-Bell banner, in
Japan through the Fuji-Bell name, in Germany via Dornier Flugzeugwerke, and
in Taiwan through AIDC. Total production to this date of the Huey in all
forms and for all operators is estimated to be over 16,000 units. Operators
range the world over - from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe - and quite possibly
make the Bell UH-1 Huey the most successful helicopter line of all time.
Major users of the Huey line have been the United States Army, Australian
Army, Philippine Army and the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force.

Mil Mi-14 (Haze)

role for the Soviet Union.

The Mil Mi-14 (NATO codename "Haze") was a dedicated naval anti-submarine
helicopter appearing in limited production numbers throughout the Cold War
beginning in 1975. The system was a further development of the Mil Mi-8
series which saw extensive use in military and civilian guises over a decade
earlier. Though a older system by traditional standards, the type has
surprisingly soldiered on with its original Russian owners and a slew of
former and current Russian allies across the globe.

When compared to the Mi-8, the Mi-14 follows some similar design aspects
which is only natural when considering individual unit production cost, ease
of maintenance and the stellar pedigree afforded by the Mi-8. The cockpit is
held at the extreme forward of the fuselage with the large window-lined
cabin taking up most of the design real estate. The twin Isotov engines sit
atop the cabin and operate at 1,950 horsepower each while driving a
five-blade main rotor and a three-blade tail rotor. The tail is held up high
in the design with the rotor at extreme aft. The undercarriage is - as
expected considering the types amphibious capability - is a
fully-retractable tricycle landing gear system. The Mi-14 Haze features a
distinct fuselage designed to act as a hull for on water landings and
operations. The Mi-14 is operated by two standard personnel in the form of a
pilot and co-pilot and can offer accommodations for up to 32 combat-ready
troops or 12 medical litters as needed. In the supply transport role, the
system can also move up to 8,800lbs of cargo.

The Mi-14 is called upon to undertake a primary anti-submarine warfare role
to which is it assigned torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and depth charges as
needed. Conversely in the search and rescue role, standard equipment is
provided for related operations. Major operators of the system continue to
be Bulgaria, Libya, North Korea, Poland and Russia - operating with either
air force or navy branches for these nations.

Bell AH-1 SuperCobra

The AH-1 SuperCobra is the US Marine twin-engined version of the base AH-1
HueyCobra.

The AH-1W and AH-1J SuperCobra series of helicopters are an updated and
slightly modified version of the AH-1 HueyCobra (or simply "Cobra") detailed
elsewhere on this website.

Much like the base Cobra, the SuperCobra is a two-bladed, tandem-seat
(gunner in front and pilot in back - though controls are redundant to an
extent), attack helicopter. The most notable exterior difference between the
original HueyCobra and the SuperCobra is the fitting of two turbines instead
of the standard single one. The SuperCobra weapon system can perform
anti-armor, air cavalry and armed reconnaissance roles and can attack point
(individual) targets with its anti-armor and anti-helicopter capabilities.

The SuperCobra is designed to provide fire support and security for various
mission-types. Weaponry revolved around mission-specific needs and can
include the TOW and Hellfire anti-armor missiles, Sidewinder anti-aircraft
missiles, Sidearm anti-radar missiles, Hydra 70 rocket pods, 20mm cannon
pods and 7.62mm machine gun pods. Primary standard armament is a General
Electric (GE) three-barrel 20mm M197 gatling gun in a powered chin turret
assembly.

The SuperCobra helicopter is currently in service with the United States
Marines, filling the same role as the AH-1 Cobra fills for the United States
Army. The Marine Corps flies the AH-1W Super Cobra only while the AH-1J was
exported to Iran. The Marine Corps can field up to 103 AH-1Ws SuperCobras
from its inventory.

system in the United States Army's search for an advanced attack helicopter.
The system was to field the latest in technology, maneuverability and
battlefield survivability that was consistent with low-level, low-speed
warfare. The end result saw the YAH-64 coming out ahead, and plans were
underway to further develop the system as the principle attack helicopter of
the US Army. Initial units of the now-designated AH-64A "Apache" became
operational as frontline systems in 1986.

The base AH-64 was designed with crew survivability in mind featuring
anti-missile systems, specialized cockpit crew protection in the form of
Kevlar armor and bulletproof glass and a specially designed superstructure.
The short wingtip mounts offered up four original hardpoints to which the
Apache system could field the powerful and accurate Hughes AGM-114 anti-tank
missile. A total of sixteen of these could be carried on the underwing
hardpoints. To take on softer targets, the conventional Hydra 70 general
purpose rocket pod in various munition amounts and warhead types could be
fielded alongside the Hellfire. The later addition of wingtip mounts allowed
the system to field AIM-9 Sidewinder or AIM-92 Stinger air-to-air missiles.
The system could also support the Sidearm anti-radiation anti-radar missile
air-to-surface missile. The primary standard armament of the Apache
consisted of the advanced chin-mounted Hughes M230 30mm chain gun with 1,200
rounds of ammunition setup that responded to the movements of the gunners
head-mounted helmet system through the IHADSS helmet sight system.
Traversing is limited to 11 degrees up, 60 degrees down and 100 degrees to
either side. The Apache is crewed by two personnel seated in tandem with the
gunner in front and the pilot seated in back.

Design of the Apache was conventional with the cockpit in a stepped
arrangement forward, the engines mounted high and to either side of the
center of the fuselage and wing stubs just underneath the powerplants. The
cockpit is designed flat glazed windows, crash supportive armored seating
and reinforced landing gear struts. Engines (AH-64D) were by General
Electric and featured the T700-GE-701C series turboshafts developing 1,890
shaft horsepower while driving a four blade main rotor and a four blade tail
rotor. The tail rotor in and "x" type arrangement sat on the port side of
the vertical tail fin. Landing gear were static with two main systems and a
tail wheel. Wire cutters to improve survivability at low level were added to
the top rear of the canopy, to each landing gear strut and one just forward
of the chin turret base underfuselage. A chaff/flare dispenser kit was added
to the aft portside of the tail assembly.

After spending some time deployed at home, the AH-64A set off for West
Germany in the first overseas deployment of the type. First combat
deployment was a short time later in 1989's Operation Just Cause concerning
Panama and was made by the 82nd Airborne. 1991 saw the AH-64A model series
deliver the opening salvos of action in Operation Desert Storm and later
taking part in the much publicized "100-hour" ground war following in which
some 500 enemy tanks were reportedly destroyed. Soon to follow were limited
deployments in the Bosnia / Kosovo affair and finally in Operation Iraqi
Freedom.

Based on lessons learned in the Gulf War of 1991, the AH-64A model was
followed by the proposed upgraded AH-64B series. This model sported a Global
Positioning System (GPS), improved communications and navigation and an all
new main rotor blade. Most of the A models were upgraded to this standard
despite funding being lost on the proposal in 1992. The AH-64C appeared
(sometimes referred to as AH-64B+) and featured much of the upgrades in
common with the succeeding "Longbow" version to follow, sans the
mast-mounted radar system and more powerful engines. An AH-64D model also
appeared but was very similar to the AH-64C series with the exception of
having a removable radar.

The definitive Apache became the AH-64D "Apache Longbow" model. This model
was distinguished by the noticeable mast-mounted AN/APG-78 Longbow radome
system above the main rotor. The Longbow radar is a millimeter wave radar
produced by Northrop Grumman and can guide the potent Hellfires through
radar seeking frequencies for an even more improved kill ratio. Of the
initial 800 or so AH-64A's produced for the US Army, no fewer than 500 were
updated to the Longbow standard. As it is mounted high on the design, the
Apache Longbow need only "peer" above the treeline to ascertain enemy
positions and potential targets. Target sharing was also a part of the
models new suite and allowed for multiple Apaches to "talk" to one another
despite one of the other not having a target locked on in its tracking
system.

The Apache Longbow featured an uprated General Electric powerplant in the
form of the T700-GE-701C series. Most all vital components were also updated
to increase the potency of the machine while at the same time improve the
crews survivability in the event of being fired upon, taking a direct hit or
having to make a crash landing. The Apache Longbow remains in frontline
active service and is seeing further enhancements and improvements made
through additional Block updates which include new rotors, more digital
automation integration with UAV battlefield elements.

The combat history of the AH-64 series as whole has been generally
acceptable. The system has shown an ability to take heavy damage and still
limp home for repairs. On occasion, a well placed hit has downed the mighty
bird several collision accidents were reported from time to time. On the
whole, the system has proven its worth in anti-tank combat and - despite its
1975-era upbringing - still remains one of the most potent attack
helicopters in service.

The British firm of Westland license-produced their own version of the
AH-64D Apache Longbow, maintaining most of the major characteristics of the
American type with addition of more powerful Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322
engines of 2,210 shaft horsepower. Israel represents another active user of
the Apache type and has operated the helicopter in countless sorties against
Hezbollah positions including direct missile strikes on top operatives.
Israel has fielded the Apache against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon and
more recently in the 2006 summer war - also against Lebanon. Other operators
include The Netherlands, Singapore, Greece, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab
Emirates. Planned usage of the weapon system is expected by Pakistan, Taiwan
and perhaps South Korea and India in the near future.

In any case, despite her twenty-plus years of active service, the Apache
series will still see operational status use for some time to come. Its
combination of mobility and firepower make it a top player on today's
battlefield. With improvements and complete digitization of systems, the
Apache will continually grow to play an expanded role in the new wireless
battlefield of tomorrow.

Bell OH-58D Kiowa Warrior / 406CS Combat Scout

The Kiowa Warrior was to be replaced by the RAH-66 Comanche, which went on
to be cancelled in 2004.

The Bell OH-58D Kiowa Warrior was a further development of the successful
Bell OH-58 Kiowa. Intended to be fielded alongside the Apache Longbow and
provide scouting and observation capabilities in an offensive support
capacity. The system intended to be an unarmed scouting platform but evolved
through its development into an armed scout (hence the Kiowa "Warrior"
designation) with the addition of Hellfire and Stinger missile support.

Main differences between the base OH-58 Kiowa and the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior
are in the new four-bladed main rotor (the base Kiowa was fielded with a
two-blade rotor) and the identifiable mast-mounted sight which provides the
Warrior with the "eyes" to see the battlefield. The system still maintains
the two-bladed tail rotor of its predecessor. The OH-58D also appears in an
export version known as the 406CS "Combat Scout" to which Saudi Arabia
remains the dominant user. These systems were delivered without the mast
mounted sight systems and sensors and without avionics technology deemed too
sensitive for export.

Armament of this armed scout consists of mission-specific munitions in the
form of Hellfire anti-tank missiles, Stinger air-to-air missiles, gun pods
in 7.62mm (.30 caliber) or 12.7mm (.50 caliber) flavors, and seven-shot
rocket pods on two wing stubs mounted on either side of the fuselage. At
least 188 OH-58D Kiowa models were upgraded to this OH-58D Kiowa Warrior
status. Seating in the warrior is standard with two sitting in side-by-side.

The OH-58D Kiowa Warrior system was to be replaced by the up-and-coming
stealthy RAH-66 Comanche light attack helicopter. But since that project's
cancellation in 2004, the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior system remains an active
participant until further notice.

Westland / AugustaWestland Lynx

Main versions of the Westland Lynx included army and navy variants, roles
that proved the type's adaptability to varying mission specifications.

The Westland Lynx (AugustaWestland since 2000) was designed to a British
Army requirement and initially consisted of four planned projects that
included an army, navy, 2-seat attack and civilian passenger versions. The
main idea of the planned four designs revolved around utilization of
differing airframes centered around the same powerplant components making
for one economical and reusable solution. In the end, only the army and navy
versions were ever actually completed but both types went on to see
extensive usage in military forces of various nations, taking on other roles
in the process and spawning a myriad of variants as needed. The Lynx is
currently in active service - a sound testament to the original 1960's era
design.

Development
Lynx began as the Westland WG.13 (Westland numbered each of their designs in
this consecutive format meaning that it had already completed some 12 other
designs previous to WG.13), intended to replace the aging "Scout" and gangly
"Wasp" platforms, both past Westland products themselves. This system was
also intended to challenge the role currently held by the American Huey UH-1
Cobra helicopter in the attack role. Initially, the helicopter endeavor
included Aerospatiale of France (to make up some 30% of the Lynx
production), with France looking to purchase both army and navy versions of
the Lynx while Britain was to take deliveries of Aerospatiale products in
turn (Gazelle and Puma). The 1967 coproduction agreement led to nowhere as
the French bowed out so Westland proceeded on the Lynx design on their own,
achieving first flight on March 21st, 1971. A total of 6 prototypes were
eventually built (along with 7 preproduction models) while production of the
Lynx line was handled at Westland in Yeovil, Somerset, England.

Despite its origins as a naval attack platform, the Lynx was quick to
showcase its performance capabilities and roomy cabin, offering more
potential for the system than originally envisioned for armed service. The
aircraft was quite capable of performing loops and could roll and handle
much like a traditional fixed-wing aircraft thanks to its main rotor design
- making it quite responsive. In 1972, the Lynx set a new helicopter speed
record by achieving 321.74 km/h and would later best this number by hitting
400.87 km/h on August 11th, 1986, the latter thanks to new rotor blades
(complete with swept tips) via the British Experimental Rotor Program (or
BERP). This particular Lynx was the 102nd production AH.Mk 1 model but
modified with twin auxiliary tail fins and water-methanol boosted engines.
The converted AH.Mk 1 model was later reconfigured back to its army status
with standard equipment eventually retired to the UK Helicopter Museum.

The Lynx has appeared in both land-based and naval variants, both stemming
from the two original army and navy designs. Land-based variants included
the initial British Army AH.Mk 1 - which took on a variety of tasks during
service - and the AH.Mk 7, an improved version of the AH.Mk 5 for the Army
Air Corps and Fleet Air Arm featuring an IR suppressor over the exhaust, the
BERP main rotor arrangement and Sky Guardian radar warning receiver (RWR).
100 of the original AH.Mk 1's were ordered. The AH.Mk 9 (or "Battlefield
Lynx") became the British Army version of the "Super Lynx" and featured a
retractable wheel undercarriage.

Naval variants began with the HAS.Mk 2 (HAS = Helicopter, Anti-Submarine)
and could be fielded as an anti-ship or anti-submarine warfare role. The
HAS.Mk 2 achieved first flight in February of 1976. The HAS.3 was an
improved version and featured sub-variants. The HMA.Mk 8 "Super Lynx" (HMA =
Helicopter, Maritime Attack) was an upgraded attack model for maritime usage
while other HMA.Mk 8 sub-variants appeared with improved technologies.

The Lynx was the focus of a major export program as well and was sold to a
variety of nations in both its army and navy forms. Though the French Army
cancelled their need for the Lynx, the French Navy went on to field the
helicopter, complete with French systems such as the OMERA-Segid search
radar. Operators of the Lynx - in all their varied forms - have included
Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Malaysia, Netherlands,
Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea,
Thailand, Qatar and - of course - the United Kingdom. "Super Lynx"
represents a successful export venture with nation-specific avionics. Brazil
was one of the first export nations to take deliveries of the Super Lynx.

On June 14th, 1984, a prototype of the "Lynx 3" went airborne. The Lynx 3
represented the successor in the Lynx line and was intended primarily as an
attack helicopter with potential buyers in France and Germany. This project
was basically nullified when the French and Germans geared up to produce
their own solution in the Eurocopter Tiger. The Lynx 3 was then officially
cancelled in 1987. Development of the Lynx 3 did further the basic Lynx
line, allowing Westland to produce the AH.Mk 9, based on the AH.Mk 7.

The Westland 30 (or WG.30) was a derivative designed from the Lynx. This
passenger transport model (commercial and military) was based on the army
version of the Lynx helicopter and was intended for VIP use. The
ill-conceived aircraft was doomed to failure, forcing Westland into
bankruptcy (forcing the creation of AugustaWestland), with only 40 of the
type constructed - all for civilian use. Operators were limited to India
(Pawan Hans), the UK (British Airways, British International Helicopters and
Helicopter Hire Ltd) and the United States (Omniflight and Airspur). First
flight of the model was achieved on April 10th, 1979.

"Future Lynx" will ensure the Lynx's reach into the new millennium. The
revised design features the tailfins as seen on the WG.30, new tail rotor
unit, 2 x LHTEC CTS800-4N turboshaft engines, 4,533lb payload, improved
countermeasures and IFF, a laser target designator and a new digital cockpit
with large multifunction displays (MFDs) numbering four.

Of the total 415 Lynxes produced, 267 of them have been for navy use.

Design
Outwardly, the Lynx featured a forward cockpit area behind the nose assembly
for pilot and copilot seated in a side-by-side arrangement with a cabin
directly behind. Cabin access was made possible by two windowed cabin doors
along either side of the fuselage. The twin turboshaft engines were mounted
behind and above the cabin and powered a four-blade, semi-rigid main rotor
component along with a four-blade tail rotor on the tail port side. Both
blade systems were arranged in a cruciform pattern while the composite tail
rotor spins in the opposite direction to reduce operational noise. The main
rotor was mounted on a forged titanium hub. The undercarriage could be of a
traditional skid system or a three-wheeled retractable undercarriage.

Armament
Armament for the Lynx varied depending on the role it was to play.
Anti-submarine versions had provision for 2 x torpedoes (Mk 44, Mk 46, A244S
and Stingray types), 2 x Mk 11 depth charges and a dipping sonar system.
Anti-surface variants could field 4 x anti-ship missiles (Sea Skua - British
Navy / AS.12 wire-guided - French Navy). For basic army attack use, the
aircraft could be fitted with x 20mm cannons (on fuselage sides), 2 x 70mm
rocket pods or 8 x TOW anti-tank guided missiles (four launch tubes to a
side) as required. For all other general purpose battlefield use, the Lynx
could be defended with crew -operated pintle-mounted machine guns.

Operational Service
The lynx was available during the British Falklands War with Argentina in
its HAS.2 naval form. The only losses occurred in the conflict were landed
Lynxes on British ships that were struck by Argentine airborne munitions -
none were lost operationally to direct enemy fire however. The Lynx also
served the British Army well in monitoring activities in Northern Ireland.
Lynxes were then deployed during the first Persian Gulf War of 1991, to
which the helicopter system was given credit for engaging Iraqi Navy
elements to good effect. The Lynx also saw combat action in the follow-up
Invasion of Iraq in 2003. More recently, a Lynx helicopter was hit by an
enemy projectile (missile or rocket) on May 6th, 2006, forcing the system to
crash into a home, killing all onboard (5). Beyond that activity, the Lynx
has proven quite capable of humanitarian and Search and Rescue (SAR)
operations as well.

Conclusion
Operationally, the Lynx has succeeded in becoming one of the top helicopter
designs of modern warfare (moreso the naval version over the army one). Not
only did it prove itself on being an adaptable platform, its performance
capabilities earned the respect of many a pilot. The Lynx legacy could very
well live on in the proposed "Future Lynx" project - a program set to take
all things good of the original Lynx and package it in an all new advanced
design with an increased lifespan. Future Lynx is expected to become
airborne in 2009 with production examples ready for delivery in 2011. The
deal with AugustaWestland and the British MoD could net some 70 to 80 total
initial delivery examples with a contract worth 1 billion pounds.

The Lynx anti-tank models in British Army service are being phased out of
service by the more capable Boeing/Westland WAH-64 Apache AH.Mk 1 - a
British Army equivalent of the American AH-64 Apache attack helicopter.

Mil Mi-24 / Mi-25 / Mi-35 (Hind)

The Hind-series of helicopters can be called on to accomplish a variety of
roles in war or peacetime.

The Mil-produced series of "Hind" helicopters was a favorite Cold War-relic
and continues (albeit modernized) in many of today's armies including
Russias. The heavy helicopter is capable of commanding various battlefield
roles, both in peacetime and wartime, and has seen extensive combat in a
variety of war zones ranging from Africa through the Middle East and into
Russia.

The Mi-24 is built on the systems of the Mi-8 "Hip" transport helicopter and
incorporates systems and subsystems from the Mi-17 series. Original Mi-24's
featured a 'glass house' cockpit very dissimilar from the more familiar
tandem, stepped cockpit pictured. The fuselage is very adaptable, capable of
carrying up to eight combat-ready troops or passengers or four loaded
stretchers. Wing systems allow for a plethora of armament to be loaded, with
the most standard being rocket pods, gun pods and anti-tank missile systems.
Wingstubs compliment the armament by allowing the ability to arm the
helicopter with air-to-air missiles for self-defense. An under-nose mounted
powered turret system rounds out the list of firepower amenities available
to the pilot and gunner.

The Mi-24 has seen action in the Soviet War in Afghanistan where Mi-24's
were frequent targets of US-provided Stinger surface-to-air missile systems.
The Mi-24 was used to popular affect in the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980's,
where they squared off against US-provided AH-1 Cobra helicopters (Saddam
Hussein would later implement the Mi-24's in Iraq again to put down rebel
uprisings throughout the country). The Hind was used in the Nicaraguan Civil
War, Sri Lanka, the invasion of Kuwait, the Russian-Chechnya wars, in Sierra
Leone, Kosovo, Ivory Coast and as recently as the Congo. The Hind-series is
a popular alternative in many countries where a full-fledged air force is
not affordable or needed, as evident by it's use in warring African
countries.

The Hind-D model was the turning point for the system as it incorporated the
new (fully-armored) cockpit seating and the four-barrel powered turret. In
all, the Hind-series has seen it's fair share of action around the globe.
Though not a perfect weapon system by any stretch, it has faired quite well
when fighting on traditional fronts and not so well when up against
guerilla-type forces. It is interesting to note that the US Army owns a few
Hind helicopters for training purposes. The Hind may also be known as "The
Crocodile" or the "Devil's Chariot".
