UK Trip December 2015 - Part 03 - Walking along Oxford Street

Continuation from: UK Trip December 2015 - Part 02 - Checking into our London apartment

Since we arrived early into London, we decided to walk along Oxford Streetand get our travel card for the London Underground.

For your information, everything about ticketing for the London Underground and buses must go through automated machines. Entry is via smart card - known as an Oyster Card.

It was a Friday and when we got to Oxford Circus Tube Station, the place was packed with shoppers.

We took a family selfie.

Despite the long flight and the hassle of walking for 1 km with our bags to the apartment we were still full of energy.

In fact we did visit a few shops to buy stuff.

Very bad shopping experience at the Jayacom IT store in Alamanda, Putrajaya

Over the weekend I was in Alamanda to shop for a simple home printer with my son. I went to the only IT store there to see whether printers were also available for sale. However, the buying experience was appalling.

When I got there, despite having a conversation with my son about the type of printer to get, none of the shop assistant came to offer any help whatsoever. In fact, I had to personally pick up some of the box of printers to put it on the table and read the specifications myself.

When searching for the ink cartridge to check on the prices of the consumables, I noted there there weren't any prices listed. When I asked, only then the 'assistants' came to life and got the prices for me. When I asked why the prices were not listed, they mentioned that the prices are currently being amended. Now isn't this against the law of not putting prices? I hope the relevant authorities look into this.

After making my choice by myself without any help from the assistants, it was time to pay. The shop then slapped a 2% surcharge on the total bill because I was paying with credit card. WTF, this is Alamanda not some shop in Low Yat Plaza! How can they charge when nothing in the shop like a warning sign to consumers about this issue was even put up!?!

I was so pissed with the whole experience that I just walked out from the shop.

It was a good that it happened because I got the same printer from AEON Big for RM30 cheaper without any loading!!!

DONT JUST BUY AT THIS SHOP FIRST. LOOK AT THE PRICE AND THEN COMPARE WITH AEON BIG. CHANCES ARE IT IS CHEAPER.

Refund by Amazon for a delivery of a book that is not of a certain standard

A few months ago, I bought this book from Amazon. It came is a big box. However, the box was way to big for the book and you can feel and hear the book being tossed around the box when handling it.

When I opened the box, my worst fears were realised. The book was damaged.

There was a big tear at the spine of the book.

The inner lining of the cover was also torn.

All the corners of the book were dented.

There were scuffing marks along the edge of the books.

I made the complaint and withing a couple of hours Amazon replied that they will refund the whole cost of the book (including the courier charges). Instead of asking me to return the book, they gave me permission to do whatever I want with the book.

Wow!

Disneyworld 2014: Shopping and jet lag don't mix; the aftermath - Part 07

(See previous posting)

While waiting for the branded stores to open, some of the smaller specialist stores opened earlier. One of them is this sweet shop. Of course the kids found something hilariously digusting....Thank God I was able to dissuade them from buying....

The Orlando International factory outlet is spread over a large area. Everything is on one floor. It feel spacious and due to the number of shops you can spend the whole day (literally) shopping.

Apart from shops, there are also a lot of eating places. The centerpiece of the huge food-court. Here we had Vietnamese for lunch.

After a few hours of shopping we started to accumulate stuff...

A typical brand store in the mall.

This is how big a typical shop unit. For some brands, they may take more than two units to make a huge warehouse like space. Even for a shop that sells just kitchen stuff, there are tons of items to display.

Check out the price for a full set of Tefal cookware - only RM280 (assuming conversion of RM4 = USD1). Interestingly, in the US, it is spelled T-fal instead of 'Tefal'.

This place is the size of a city block!

A well-known watch distributor in the US.

By 8 p.m., the kids were bushed (also by the effect of jet-lag).

Finally, time to go back with our 'hunting' tropies......

Disneyworld 2014: Shopping at Orlando's Premium Outlet - Part 06

(See previous posting)

The first night went well. We all were dead tired after the long trip and had a good rest. When we woke up, it was a Sunday. We already plan to allocate this day for shopping instead of going to the park. We were advised to only head for the park on weekdays to avoid crowds.

What best start for a day than a cup of Maggi. Yes, I know, it is unhealthy. We are on holiday, lets live a little.

We already booked our transport to the biggest factory outlet in Orlando. We had our meal and got ready for the excursion.

Come to think about it, this is the first time that we started our holiday with shopping.
Just before we moved on about the shopping trip I would like to share the unique way Disney tracks their guests. What you see on my wrist on the right is a Disney MagicBand.

This is an RFID digital tag that (1) payment system for all purchases in Disneyworld, (2) digital key to open the hotel room door, (3) booking system for Fastpass, (4) register for rides as well as link photos taken by Disney staff, and (5) security feature to enter and track your movements in the resort.

As a parent, it is very reassuring in event you lose track of any of your children, the system can easily locate them. For the children, an excellent way to buy things without need to carry cash around (you can inform Disney to disable this buying option from the children's MagicBand. However, what is the fun in that).

Before we left to room to get to our transport, I noticed the safety information at the back of the door. So cute, even the safety instruction has been Disneyfied.

These guys think of everything.

The time was 8:00 am in the morning when we got to the main lobby. It took us about 5 minutes to walk from our lodge to the main resort building.

Port Orleans Resort Riverside is not one big building but spread over a few dozen acres in many small lodges of two floors consisting of 64 rooms each. If you are unlucky enough to be assigned the furthest lodge, you need to walk close to 15 minutes to get there. We were kinda lucky as Alligator Bayou Lodge 16 was only 5 minutes away.

The large van there on time and the driver took us to the Orlando Premier Outlet situated about 20 minutes away. Traffic was not that heavy considering that it was a Sunday morning.

The freeways in America has always interest me because of number of lanes. The freeway that we were on was an 8-lane route.

We spoke to the driver who happens to be from Haiti. He told us that taxis are easy to get and not that expensive. In fact, he recommended we don't need to book a taxi back but instead just go to a taxi stand to grab one anytime we feel like going home.

After 20 minutes in the van, we arrived at the Orlando Premium Outlet center. The first thing that went to my mind was the similarity to Johor Premium Outlet back home in Malaysia. Actually, I shouldn't be surprised since both these outlets have common shareholders.

Nevertheless, this premium outlet is still much bigger than the one in Johor.

As it was approximately 8:30 am in the morning and the shops officially opens from 9:30 am onwards, we decided to walk around and survey the shops that we want to visit.

We were lucky that the information counter was already opened and we were able to get a map of the complex. We sat down at the food court and started planning our shopping strategy.

To be continued.

Window shopping in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

Over a few weekend ago did some window shopping in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. It has been a long time since I have been in this mall. In the centre court was the Art of Time exhibition for watch lovers.

The best floor for me must be the 6th floor because this is where the restaurants are. It is also more spacious.

We arrived early. From the large bay windows, we can see people slowly streaming into the mall.

While resting beside the IWC watch shop, saw a few watches...

My personal favorite is this watch on the right (below).

Boutique shops from Tag Heuer, Rado and Mont Blanc in Alamanda Shopping Mall, Putrajaya

Over the holidays I was walking in Alamanda Shopping Mall, Putrajaya when I chance to see the new Mont Blanc boutique shop that has just opened. All the leather goods as well as watches under the brand are on display.

Interestingly, I note that Tag Heuer will also be opening a boutique store in the mall. Can't want for that.

As a bonus, Rado is also doing the same.

Hari Raya shopping at Komplek Kraf Jalan Conlay, Kuala Lumpur

Instead of trying to wrestle with traffic and millions of shoppers, why not head towards Komplek Kraf Jalan Conlay, Kuala Lumpur for your Hari Raya shopping need. The whole basement of the complex has been turned into a bazaar. What's good is that it's air-conditioned! You can also bargain. It opens from 10am to 10 pm every day until 23 July 2014.

Parking is also ample.
