Business, Economic and Finance: Malaysia reviewing cost of development projects

"KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 (Reuters) - Malaysia is reviewing some projects under a state development blueprint, the prime minister said on Tuesday, reviving concerns the government may shelve them after its shock electoral setback in last month's poll."

This situation is not surprising. What do you expect? You cannot get everything in life. Since the people have chosen the moral high ground instead of economic necessity and financial security, prepare to face the consequences.

Singapore, a country more advanced economically and financially than Malaysia, remains adamant that their "democracy" is needed to safeguard what has been achieved thus far. We should learn from them. I'm for one are all for adopting Singapore's "democracy" here in Malaysia. Unlike Singapore, the number of triggers to national crisis is more here.

Thailand on the other hand is the complete opposite. They are seen to be more democratised than us but see where it has lead them. Riots, non-judicious killing, change of government every other month, coups etc, all affect the growth of the country. Can you just imagine where Thailand would be now if they had followed our democratic ways?

There are tensions among the races. Anyone who does not see it is blind. Instead of giving opportunities for these tensions to boil over, why not focus the aggrieve energy to something that is profitable for everyone. For the last 50 years, that was the focus (Singapore is a firm believer in this). Remember May 13, 1969? Our first effort on democracy ended in bloodshed and the suspension of the constitution.

Let us be realistic. As a nation, we have not reached a level of maturity to be as open as the western democracies. We should focus on something that we call all relate to; stability, economic prosperity and peace. If the authorities have some semblance of governance, our formula can last for another 50 years.
