What I did (or didn’t do) during Earth Hour

The concept of celebrating Earth for one hour in a year is a very noble act. However, morally, it is should not be encouraged. The ethical treatment of Earth should be all the time!

Did I switched-off all my lights during Earth hour? No, I did not. In fact, I did what I usually do at the time – doing household chores. The lights were on and so was the dishwasher and vacuum cleaner.

Should I be labeled as a disgrace? This is a definite no. this is because I have been doing things for Earth for every hour, every day for the last 7 years!

When I bought my first house in 2003, I started planning energy conservation designs to my house. This house is in Putrajaya. The following are some of the key energy/utility savings modification made to the house:

  1. All lights points uses energy saving light bulbs;
  2. House painted with light reflective paint to reduce heat absorption;
  3. Roof sprayed with reflective filament paint to reduce heat absorption;
  4. Planting of trees at strategic points of the house to block direct sunlight into the house during peak sunlight period;
  5. Having all windows and doors framed with fine wire mesh so as to allow windows to be opened at all times to increase air circulation while stopping insects and rodent to enter;
  6. Existing rain gutters have been redirected to flow all rain water to a major water catchment area for use in the garden as well as general cleaning;
  7. Setting up a composting system in the garden to compost food and garden waste to create nutrient rich soil;
  8. Installing solar heaters for hot water; and
  9. Using voltage regulator technology to reduce power spikes hence reducing electrical consumption.

Do you have any of these things in your house?

Hi RVL,

The volt regulator is the s simple plug like equipement that you can get in some of the bigger malls. One place I know that you can get it is at the ACE hardware store in Mid Valley. There is a dedicated sales person handling the sale where you can ask questions. Quite pricy at RM350 a piece (if you have a 3 phase electrical system, you need 3 units. One for each phase). Payback is withing a year or two. Hope this helps.
