Bus lanes are road resources gone to waste

The concept of bus lanes is good in theory. However, in practical terms, allocating a special road lane just for buses increase the total cost to the society. Let me explain.

In the original concept, the buss lane is dedicated to public transport so that a bigger volume of people can be transported for a given space and time. Those that decide not to use public transport should have to suffer the additional cost in time for their commuting needs.

This theory can only be made practical if, and only if, public transport is the only mode of transport. All other modes of transport become too expensive. At the moment, the cost of ownership and maintenance of car on a per day basis is only about RM20. Although it is a far cry from RM2 per day on the Kuala Lumpur public transport system, that RM20 gives you flexibilities that no public transportation system can provide i.e. door-to-door and anytime service. To make public transport work in Kuala Lumpur, a drastic measure must be made.

At the moment, more cars are being used in the city and the loss of a lane to general traffic makes the congestion even worst. Hence, increasing the overall cost to society.

Although it pains me to suggest such a thing, but a congestion charge similar to London and Singapore City must be done. Adding a further RM20 per day would surely push the vast majority of car owners to reconsider their daily commuting strategy.

That's why i ride whenever possible, waking up every morning seeing thousand gallons of fuel being wasted to move a mere 5 meters is just idiotic.

Although i believe a simpler and quite possibly more effective solution is to increased the speed limit. Most cars today are well beyond capable of committing to high cornering speed and shorter braking time, speed is not usually a factor in accidents, its negligence and poor judgment.

A slower driver creates more disruption to traffic flow than fast drivers, and thus motorist have to negotiate different routes to counter the "pest".

i not talking autobahn speeds here, just another 30km/h wouldn't hurt. Problem is no one would believe me that this is a good idea.
