Switzerland trip - Day 5 - Up Mount Nordkette near Innsbruck, Austria

After the afternoon walking tour around Innsbruck town centre, we went up the famous ski slope where the Winter Olympics were held. To get to the top, we need to go via a series of vernacular trains and cable-cars.

Below is the map of the slope in question.

We first took a train at the Congress underground train station situated near a famous conference hall in town. As I mentioned earlier in my previous postings regarding this trip, as it was not a peak period for tourists, there was no queue and crowd to shout about.

The train tracks was parallel to the river Inn. Despite the freezing cold, the river remains liquid.

The Nordkette - where the Olympic games were held.

Half way up the slope. The city of Innsbruck.

Two thirds up. Arriving near the base station.

The base station. Here, there are houses and you can see typical Austrians houses.

Quite futuristic the station, even though it was built in the 1980s!

Up the cable car to the peak.

Skiers having fun.

Scary looking down.......

We were now above the low clouds. The weather was beautiful.

Streaks of ice from the room of the penultimate peak station.

Me and my son Azhar, all bundle up.

Another stunning view of the valley. Straight ahead is Italy.

The final cable car ride up to the ultimate peak station. The walls you see at the side of the slope is the avalanche barriers.

The shadow of our cable car. Note the absesnse of any skiers. Everyone must be in office or school.

At the top, saw some workers building an igloo building. Unfortunately, it is still in progress so we cannot enter.

At the edge of the mountain. On the left you will see a partial deck chair. A feet away from it is drop of hundreds of metres! Actually, I am surprised there wasn't any barriers being put up to prevent accidents.

Honestly, I was scared. Instead of sitting at the very edge, I set on a chair well away from the cliff and facing away for it.
