It was not long ago that satellite TV came to our shores. The availability of the latest shows was brilliant for me as the need to wait for it to come on the TV is shortened considerably. As time goes by, I am getting disappointed with the speed of satellite TV. Even now, terrestrial TV such as TV3 is getting very proactive to source for the hit shows, faster than Astro!
The availability of broadband has introduced an even better option for consumers. Now, we can immediately download the hit programmes almost immediately after its first broadcast. The torrent community is simply awesome. Although issues of copyright remain a very pertinent issue in this case, the technology does prove that intermediaries such as TV stations are getting irrelevant. Now, users can get instant access to the shows they want to see directly from the producers.
I don't think this is surprising. Look at how the other industries where middleman are involved. The bond market is a good example. Companies used to borrow from banks but with the bond market maturing, they can source the capital directly from the end-investors, hereby bypassing the middleman (in this case the bank). Internet shopping is also similar. Instead of buying via a department store, you can now buy directly from the producer as producer prices. This is a win-win situation for the manufacturer and consumer.
The key in the whole scheme of things is broadband availability. With broadband, the world is ours for the taking!
